SWAPTEMBER
Join STREAT’s Swaptember Campaign and Make a Difference, One Cup, Container or Utensil at a Time!
Building on the success of our annual Siptember campaign, we’re are excited to announce Swaptember in 2025. Swaptember is an initiative aimed at reducing disposable container waste and making a positive impact on the environment including include reusable shopping containers, dining plates and utensils. Swaptember is a month-long movement that seeks to inspire individuals, organizations, and communities to embrace sustainable practices and work towards a greener future.

What’s the big deal?
Single-use coffee cups have become a significant environmental concern, with a staggering 1.87 billion cups estimated to end up in Australian landfill each year. And according to a 2023 report by Sustainability Victoria, Australians dispose of approximately 1.9 million tonnes of packaging waste annually.
This not only contributes to landfill waste but also leads to approximately incredibly large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating the global climate crisis. With the Swaptember campaign, we aim to reverse this trend and create lasting change. By encouraging individuals to remember their reusable coffee cups, or bring their own take-away food / market shopping containers and opt for sustainable alternatives, we can collectively reduce the environmental impact caused by disposable items.
Below you will find our campaign video from SIPTEMBER 2024 that explores this issue.
SIPTEMBER 2024 SUCCESS
Launched in 2019, Siptember was the proud winner of the 2024 Tidy Towns and Cities behaviour change and education award – this year we’re building on what we’ve learned, and expanding to containers in general (hence the name change); creating ways for you to join whether you’re a hospitality organisation, market trader, work or friendship team or an individual. We’d love you to join so we can make a bigger difference together.
Rebecca Scott, CEO and co-founder of STREAT sees expanding Swaptember will amplify collective impact. “We’d love as many people as possible to join us this Swaptember, from cafes and coffee carts, to work teams and individuals.” She says. “Every single-use coffee container we refuse is a vote for community-driven change. Let’s turn small actions into a force that protects both people and the planet.”

We want you!
As part of the campaign, participants will receive a comprehensive toolkit, including valuable tips on how to remember their reusable cup, strategies for success, and resources to track their progress. A media kit with images, hashtags, and suggested social media copy will empower participants to spread the message of circularity to their networks and inspire others to join the cause.
In addition to individual efforts, the Swaptember Campaign encourages participants to connect with like-minded people and share their progress along the way.
Join us this Swaptember and make a difference, one cup at a time. Together, let’s raise our cups for a greener and more sustainable future!
Hospitality organisations, work and family groups or individuals interested in joining Siptember can receive the Siptember toolkit by filling in the form.
