Street food
A fork in the road for street youth
Travelling across Asia again and again the ‘Hello’ or friendly greeting translates to ‘Have you eaten rice yet?’. This greeting illustrates the vital role of rice in sustaining half the world’s population, but also acknowledges the responsibility of people to nourish one another.
You’ll devour over 85,000 meals in your life-time, and not even remember most of them. Few, if any, will be life changing for someone else. That’s something you can change by buying a meal at STREAT.
We love street food
A lot of meetings we have in our office are around food. There's the fish-head laksa that's become a bit of an initiation dish. There's the menu testing that fills our office with amazing aromas and the communal taste-testing. There's the sharing of adventure tales and stories of amazing meals around the globe. We actually worked out the other day that collectively we'd tried the street food in x different countries.
What do we love about street food so much? We couldn't say it better than Tom Kime in his book
As Tom Kime says in his book Street Food,
“To get a feel for the beating heart of any community, and to begin to understand a culture different from your own, you need to experience the food. The best way to experience the real food that fuels and drives a community…is to sample the street food. The food from roadside stands, markets, open-air stalls, carts and wagons, and small cafes and bars captures the essence of life in that culture. This food is available 24/7, not just put on because there is a guest. It is real, robust, and a gauge of how people live and what values are important to the community.”
Our seasonal menu
STREAT's food is themed by region, with street food dishes from the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Africa, Europe, Americas, and Australia.

Recipes
STREAT doesn't have a mix of 11 secret herbs and spices. Instead we want you to get into your kitchen - or onto your street - and discover the joys of cooking and sharing hawker food.
Kick-start your street food recipe collection with our Thai prawn red curry that was developed by chef Philip Johnson. We'll be sharing more recipes over the coming months.
Cooking with kids
Why should big kids have all the fun? Sticking with the Thai street food theme we've attached our first kid's recipe for kebabs.
The day is coming when a single carrot, freshly observed, will set off a revolution.
